For no reason at all, I was reminded of a catchy song from "The Grand Duke", one of Gilbert and Sullivan's more obscure works. (Below is the opening of the operetta, plus the song ... plus all the lyrics, so you can follow along!) :)

Anyway, the chorus comes in, playing a ... travelling company of actors (how droll), and about to celebrate a double-wedding. After the opening chorus, it is revealed that they are plotting to depose the eponymous Grand Duke, because he is making everyone's life a misery.

But -- and this is the point -- no-one is allowed to talk about the conspiracy without first eating a sausage roll. If the person he/she is talking to also eats a sausage roll, then both sides know that it's safe to talk about the conspiracy. (Otherwise, the other side is a spy! Horrors!) =P Of course, no-one considers for a moment the fact that a spy might also enjoy a sausage roll. (But of course, after six months of eating sausage rolls, everyone is thoroughly sick of them). =P

It's a catchy and fun song ... and here's where the Discworld angle comes in. Can anyone imagine this happening in A-M? ;)

Here's what'd happen:

1. Dibbler will make a killing, of course (both figuratively and probably also literally), which will be suspicious in and of itself.
2. The sight of people singing in the street about eating sausage rolls would definitely attract the attention of the Watch.
3. But ... the sight of people throwing up after eating a Dibbler sausage roll would probably reassure the Watch that everything is normal. After all, singing in the street about sausage rolls (and eating Dibbler's rolls) are not crimes, even if they are reeeeeally suspicious.

Where do you think this would go? I've no idea, but I'm sure it would be fun. :) Please feel free to share your ideas!
