Danielle Ackley-McPhail and Day Al-Mohamed: Baba Ali and the Clockeork Djinn (2014, 2020)
subtitle: a steampunk faerie tale
Ali studied the combination of magic and science in London, but when his father died he was ordered home to Arabia by his older brother. He is true to his culture's requirements of the duty owed even to hateful family, but the conditions are such as would cause rebellion in the mildest of hearts. Worse still, there are plots and betrayals he had no warning of. Events therefore are somewhat directed by chance, as is standard even in modernized tales of fantastical science.
Yes, there is a djinn and a main character named Ali, a treasure and thieves, but just how the treasure works out is distinctly unusual.
Well written with a great deal of respectful attention paid to the specifics of the culture. So it's not the wildest of action stories, but it held my interest.
