Here's the online version: https://inews.co.uk/culture/books/inside-story-terry-pratchett-discworld-those-knew-him-4373899

Hopefully that's better... although it might pop up an annoy, undismissable "subscribe" box...
Thanks, Molokov! :) I copied the text (with Ctrl+A to "Select All", then Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V into Notepad).

I tried posting it below, for the benefit of anyone else who couldn't read this, but the forum won't let me post more than 6,000 characters. Alas. :(

Hum. Everyone has their own list of favourites, but yes, I agree about some of these and disagree on others.

The Shepherd's Crown isn't the best place to start, in my not-so-humble. It's probably the worst place to start. "Let's start at the very ending, a very bad place to start."

Reaper Man is amusing enough, but I think Wyrd Sisters, Witches Abroad and Maskerade are better.

The others are solid recommendations, though. :) What did you think?

You definitely don't want to start with his recomendation of Shepards Crown, I don't think his listing is of much use to a new reader.
Really? I'm surprised. Equal Rites, Mort, Guards! Guards!, Small Gods -- these are all very solid books, and high on any fan's list ... right? :)

ER introduces the Witches; Mort introduces Death, and G!G! introduces the City Watch. Small Gods is one of Terry's best. :)

Night Watch is also there, but I wouldn't recommend it to a new reader.

Instead of "Shepherd's Crown", I'd say "Amazing Maurice" ... and instead of "Reaper Man", I'd recommend "Nation". Do you agree?

Sure, TWFM is a great introduction to a new reader.

"Nation" is a good stand-alone, even if it's not Discworld. Perhaps it could be recommended to any reader who turns up their nose at fantasy! Because surely everybody know that fantasy is only for geeks in anoraks! And so on. (You know, all the hoary old cliches about fantasy readers). :)

I'm not sure where "Eric" or "The Last Hero" would fit. "Eric" is very lightweight, but I suppose it could please a new reader who thinks in terms of "Let's take a quick look at this Pratchett bloke and see if he's worth it."

"The Last Hero" is similarly short, but much better value, in my opinion. It's not just the very fine illustrations, but the story is stronger and the characters are more compelling. (The fact that I just listened to Stephen Briggs narrate TLH has nothing to do with it, of course). ;)

What do you think?
