Boey, Meihan: The Formidable Miss Cassidy (2021) trade paperback.
The story begins in 1895, in Singapore. A decidedly Scottish governess arrives from her previous job in India to care for the sole surviving daughter of a British family struck down by illness. Things are not what they seem. There is local horror, generational issues, and several kinds of magic in a multicultural setting. Over a few years - 1897, 1904 - the types of trouble, magic, and mythos expand amazingly.
The vocabulary is impressive. I had to look up a word, which has not happened in a very long time.

Boey's first novel originally came out in Singapore and has now been picked up by Harper Perennial.

She has also written The Enigmatic Madam Ingram, which I hope to find.

Mrs Ingram is the second, yes. Thanks for the link! I didn't know there was a third book as well!
