The Ghost Bride, by Yangsze choo (2014) I first heard about this book in 2014 and it took until now for me to find a copy. It was worth the wait. There are detective story elements, definitely a whodunnit, but also an immersion into a complex belief system of disparate elements in a melting-pot society of 1890s Malaya (before it was renamed Malaysia). The heroine doesn't want to be married to the deceased son of the local rich family. She would much rather marry the scorned but still living son. Magic happens, other-world travel happens, a version of the Chinese underworld happens, but the belief systems of several cultures have blended and produced unpredictable changes in the other world. The end is not what one would expect.
